Hello Cre8tive readers! I'm Shauna from Satori Design for Living and I was thrilled when Mandy asked me to guest post. I quickly jumped at the chance knowing that her readers would be just as lovely as she is and would most likely share a similar passion for interior design and decorating. Am I right?
With the onset of spring and the nearing of summer, my love of decorating is in full swing as I focus on freshening the look of our home, as well as those of my clients. Like most people, I don't ever feel like a room in my house is completely done. I prefer curating a room over time to allow character to develop and for it to be a true representation of our family. Sometimes that means having sections of bare walls or shelves that look sparse, but I'm not a believer in making a home look like it came from a catalogue.
One of the quickest and simplest ways I like to add personality to a space is through the use of decorative pillows. In my home, I have down inserts in varying sizes and I purchase or sew removable pillow covers to easily change up the look with the seasons. I'm often asked by my clients how to get the right mix of sizes and patterns. In many cases it comes down to personal preference, but there are a few guidelines I like to follow.
Although there are several factors that come into play when selecting pillow fabrics for a living space, I generally like to use:
- one bold large-scaled print
- two or three small-scaled prints
- one or two neutral patterned fabrics
- two or three solid colored fabrics
Of course this depends on the fabric choice used for the furniture, but assuming it is fairly neutral, this mix works well.
Recently, I worked with a client on a sunroom design that required pillows for the sofa, chairs and window bench. The fabric choices for each are shown below.
Once we determined the upholstery fabrics, I began to source fabrics, as well as ready-made pillow options to add interest and comfort to the furniture pieces. I took my cues from the adjoining kitchen, which was filled with greens, taupes and a bit of orange. The sunroom also had large windows with views of country landscape and my client adored that feature.
Here are the pillow fabrics we decided on:
One more thing to consider was the size and placement of the pillows. The pillow formula I like to follow for the sofa is:
- Place 2 matching pillows on either side of the sofa (about 22 x 22”)
- Place one square (20”) pillow on one side and another square 18” pillow on the other
- Bridge the gap in the middle with a smaller rectangular pillow (about 14 x 22”)
Thanks for having me, Mandy!
