Who knew picking a simple color such as white could be so daunting.
Yesterday me and my better halfs made a quick stop to Benjamin Moore to pick out white paint for the kitchen cabinets. Seems easy right? Go to a store pick your color and your on your way. Afterall white is white, right ? Wrong!
Did you know Benjamin Moore has over 151 whites to choose from? Cause I sure didn't know that!
So as we enter the door we head straight for the wall and start grabbing dozens of white samples when all of a sudden they start to appear looking more pinkish, purplelish (is that even a word) blue, yellow and even green. With so many undertones and tints it makes you think your eyes are playing tricks on you. Looking dazed and confused we decided on 2 colors and had them make them into sample sizes.
I found that getting sample colors is always the best thing to do when painting any color of your room that way you get to see it first hand in your own home and help you with your decision. Because lets face it, last thing we want is our cabinets looking pink, I mean I don't mind but I don't think that would fly very well with 3 boys in the house.
Here are a few things I learned that may help you in choosing white paint:
- Try using whites that have ivory and cream tints to be on the safe side
- Lighting makes all the difference
- Surrounding elements like red furniture can make a room look pink or be a perfect contrast
- Semi gloss maximizes the light in a room while matte absorbs light
- Don't just stick to one color of white, try a different shade of white for your doors and trims
Hope these tips will help you!
